first entry

Hey y'all, I've decided to create a blog, so that y'all can stay in touch with what's going on in my life here in Chapel Hill. I just ate lunch with Dad at Elmo's Diner, my favorite place here at the Hill. It was great catching up with him and eating some chocolate chip pancakes. And Chrissy sent me some awesome cookies, which I am going to enjoy later on tonight. I skipped 2/3 classes today, but oh well, the world is still spinning.

My friend Andrew and I decided that we are going to volunteer in Arequipa, Peru for a month or so next summer while we are in South America. We are going to make the reservations and sign-up tonight! I am probably going to be teaching English and may be some construction work, while Andrew is going to do construction work and taking some Spanish classes. I am doing lots of research on South America, and what we should do down there and I'm getting hyped!

Last night, we had our first Women's Basketball game of the season. It was an exhibition game against a D-2 school called Carson Newman. The ladies won with more than a fifty-point lead and had over 110 points ... they are so insanely good and ranked #1 in the pre-season rankings. Emma and I had a great game, and did some great stunts. AND I did my first round-off to back-tuck on the gym floor. (basically a sommersault to a back flip! It felt awesome). Emma and I also get to work with Varsity this weekend when a professional cheerleading coach is coming to Chapel Hill. We are the only couple on JV that gets to do this, so we are stoked! There are games the next two Fridays if anyone wants to come. This year we're in the Dean Dome, so it's awesome. The Women's website has upcoming events on it.

I got the APPLES service-learning course that I applied for about 2 weeks ago. It is a course that studies the theory and application of migration theory from a Latin American perspective. During next semester, I will attend classes and conduct ethnographic research about the local Hispanic migrant populations here around Chapel Hill and how immigration policy affects their lives here. During spring break the class is going to go to Guanajuato, Mexico to study how migration is affecting the local communities their. I think there is some crazy statistic that over the past decade or two decades, Mexico's economy has shrunk by 50% because of its citizens' emigration to the US. This is a great opportunity for me and my future career working with the immigration policy.

God has really blessed me with a great week!
